What Is A Bung Hole Plug?

A barrel that does not have a lid, generally will have a bung hole drilled into it. More times than not, these holes are close to two inches in diameter and to seal or plug the hole, a stopper, simply known as a bung hole plug, is used to plug the opening. In other words, a bung hole plug is used to plug a bung hole.

Wine barrels are the most well-known container that use a bung hole to evacuate the gasses in a wine barrel, along with moving wine into and out of the barrel. Also, the hole is plugged and unplugged for testing and tasting wine as it ferments and ages.
